Heat and cold – Powerful pain relievers Heat and cold therapy are two of the simplest, least expensive and the most effective methods of pain relief. Also they are non-invasive and non-addictive. Hot packs – Heat Therapy Heat causes the blood vessels to dilate which brings more blood to the heated area. -This increases the amount of needed nutrients - Increases the amount of oxygen - Removes waste form the area. -Decreases muscle spasm Relaxes tense and tired muscles Relieves Pain Increases the range of motion Cold Packs – Cold Therapy Cold causes the blood vessels to constrict, decreasing the blood flow to the cooled area. -Reduces inflammation -Reduces pain -Reduces muscle spasm When using heat therapy the heat is usually applied for about ½ hour. Then either apply cool or cold and then apply heat again if necessary. There are many ways to apply the heat click here to see many varieties available.The amount of time for cold therapy is less than heat therapy; usually less than 15 minutes. The effects of cold are known to last longer than heat.Hot and cold agents should always be used with caution.
